The Donald W. Reynolds Center for American Art and Portraiture encompasses the National Portrait Gallery and the Smithsonian American Art Museum. Home to some of the United States’ most valuable and revered works of art, the center’s renovation and reopening created an opportunity to freshly brand a venerable
DC institution.

We created an identity for the weeklong series of events and galas to dedicate and
celebrate the center by highlighting the building itself as an American treasure.
With a warm, pastel color palette to evoke the building’s façade, we used features from
the Greek revival architecture to accent and individualize everything from invitations
to programs to apparel.

For the opening of the center’s Robert & Arlene Kogod Courtyard a year later, we created
a related event identity and invitations. The courtyard features a stunning, glass canopy
by renowned architect Sir Norman Foster. Foster has described the roof as “cloud-like,”
so we kept the design of the materials deliberately simple, emphasizing the light and
space of the courtyard.
